Therese Briggs
Therese Briggs is an artist exploring memory contained in both animate and inanimate objects which she expresses using motifs and language associated with her own visual memories. While her works on paper reflect a precision that evokes the restrained and instructional world of science, her works on canvas are fluid and organic where pictorial elements emerge from a combination of thin layers of glazes, drips, dots, and opaque brush marks.
Recently she has been exploring the concept of plant memory and displacement through the lens of the European expeditions of the 17 th and 18th centuries, where plants were ‘discovered’, exploited, and removed from their natural habitat. She suggests the plants might be considered a metaphor for the millions of humans who were displaced, indentured, and imprisoned through the Imperialist ambitions of time.
Before gaining her qualification, she undertook training in painting through Short Courses at the National Art School and ArtEst Art School in Sydney. She consolidated these experiences in 2022 when she completed her Advanced Diploma of Visual Arts at Meadowbank TAFE.
